Maureen Nicol

Founder & Director, Camp Story

Maureen Nicol is a PhD student at the University of Texas at Austin studying Early Childhood Education and the Founder and Director of Camp Story – a pop-up arts camp based on the continent of Africa. With a background in teaching and education, Maureen is dedicated to making a change through education, teacher training and making schools places where children feel safe, celebrated, and like creative agents of change. She is committed to working with young children and educators to ensure every child and teacher knows their value, worth and power. Maureen is currently pursuing research opportunities in East Austin to conduct counter storytelling with Black Female teachers and in New Orleans with young Black girls. She is also researching and building curriculum for young girls, specifically young girls of color, to see themselves as feminists using arts integration. Maureen believes in building community and community organizing. In her free time she loves to cook, travel and play with her dog, Toulouse.
